If you search online for the word “relationships”, the results will probably consist of several links to articles and websites focusing on the topic of relationships between members of the opposite sex and with others around you.
However, within these results we don’t find much information on the most important relationship you will ever have; the one you have with yourself.
Given that our external world tends to be a reflection of our internal world, this relationship will ultimately determine how people see us. If we view ourselves as below average, unsuccessful or a failure, then we exude these qualities in our energy, leading the people in our lives to see us in the exact same way.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, let’s take the time to focus on the most important relationship in our life. More important than how we manage others, is how we manage ourselves.
A negative self-image can result from a number of different things in your life. However, we must remember that what caused the failure is not as important as focusing on how to fix it. Here are a few different ways to begin repairing a negative self-image.
Affirmations are one of the most commonly used tools to make changes in our daily lives. In fact, it has been said that if you lie to yourself enough, eventually you will start to believe that lie. The negative self-image you have developed is based largely on a byproduct of something you have been telling yourself over and over again. Thus, it makes sense that the same can be done for creating a new positive self-image.
Given the rapid pace at which technology is developing, people are finding many innovative ways to combine visualization with affirmations. “Mind Movies” are an excellent technique for doing this. The concept of a mind movie is rather simple. First, you develop a list of affirmations for all the things that you want in your life. Then, find pictures to match all the affirmations you have written down. Combine the pictures and affirmations with some upbeat music and there you have it, a “mind movie”. What’s so great about this technology is that it eases the burden of trying to picture something in your head, since you have it right there in front of you.
A wide range of people, from athletes to professional speakers have utilized visualization in order to enhance their performance. One of the beautiful things about our brain is that it cannot fully distinguish between experiences that are imagined versus those that actually happened. Think about it. Have you ever had a dream so vivid that a few days later you couldn’t remember whether or not it was something that actually happened? This is exactly what is happening in the visualization process. By visualizing a new, empowering self-image on a daily basis, your mind will eventually accept it as reality, and the external world you see will soon follow.
Each of these tools is equally effective in creating a positive self-image. The key however, is commitment and consistency. This Valentine’s Day, choose your favorite one and take the first step into strengthening your most important relationship. At the end of the day, the only person who can truly make you happy is you.
